Exploring the Future of Agriculture with CABI’s BioProtection Portal: A Sustainable Alternative to Conventional Pesticides

Bioprotection products are emerging as a sustainable alternative to conventional pesticides, offering long-term benefits such as reduced environmental impact, increased market access, and enhanced crop safety. However, a major challenge hindering their broader adoption is the lack of accessible, reliable information on their availability, application, and benefits. The CABI BioProtection Portal was created to bridge this information gap, making it easier for growers and agricultural advisors to identify, source, and use registered biological products for crop protection.

In a recent AgroTalk session, Emma Jenner, Strategic Planning and Operations Manager at CABI and Project Manager of the CABI BioProtection Portal, shared how this innovative tool is transforming agricultural practices around the world. Here, we’ll dive into the key insights from Emma's talk and explore how the BioProtection Portal is supporting farmers and advisors in the journey towards a more sustainable and equitable agriculture.

The Growing Need for Bioprotection Solutions

As agriculture seeks to address challenges like pesticide resistance, environmental degradation, and consumer demand for safer food, the shift towards bioprotection is gaining momentum. Unlike conventional pesticides, bioprotection products such as biocontrol agents and biopesticides can offer a safer and more sustainable means of managing pests and diseases. They support integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, which aim to minimize chemical inputs, reducing risks to both human health and ecosystems.

Yet, many advisors and farmers remain unaware of the bio-control options available or lack practical guidance on their effective use.

“Advisory services often struggle with limited knowledge on biocontrol products—many advisors simply don’t know what’s out there or how these solutions can fit into their existing practices,” said Emma Jenner during the AgroTalk.

This is where the CABI BioProtection Portal makes a difference.

What the CABI BioProtection Portal Offers

The BioProtection Portal is an open-access, web-based tool, accessible via mobile and desktop, that provides a comprehensive database of registered biocontrol products. Available in 15 languages and covering nearly 50 countries, the portal allows users to search for biocontrol products by crop, pest, and country. With 4,300 products currently listed, it is one of the most extensive bioprotection resources available globally.

The platform also offers a valuable educational component, providing articles and e-learning courses on bioprotection. This allows users to learn more about biocontrol, understand how to implement it as part of IPM practices, and access specific product information that aids in correct application.

“Our goal is to help users identify, source, and apply biocontrol products effectively,” explained Emma.

How the BioProtection Portal Works

Using the portal is simple. After selecting their country, crop, and pest, users are presented with a list of biocontrol options registered for use in their location. For each product, the portal displays key information, including the active ingredients and contact details for manufacturers or distributors. Partner products are given priority listings, and their pages include additional data on safe handling, storage, and application requirements—essential details that help users make informed choices and safely implement these products.

In addition to growers and agricultural advisors, national authorities responsible for the regulation of these products are using the tool. Regulatory bodies benefit from seeing biocontrol standards across borders, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Expanding Access to Sustainable Agriculture

CABI’s approach to funding the BioProtection Portal ensures its longevity and accessibility. While the portal initially relied on funding from international development agencies, CABI has since introduced a membership model that includes partners, sponsors, and associates. Biocontrol manufacturers, for example, gain visibility on the portal while helping fund its maintenance. Strategic partnerships with organizations like the Rainforest Alliance, also a SAN member, also support the portal’s development and promote sustainable agriculture at a global scale.

SAN’s Partnership with the BioProtection Portal

The Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) is proud to support the BioProtection Portal as an associate member. Through our collaboration with CABI, we aim to raise awareness of this critical tool among our network of members, partners, and stakeholders. Together, we are promoting safer and more sustainable agricultural practices that protect the environment and the communities who depend on it.

The CABI BioProtection Portal exemplifies SAN members' commitment to sustainable and equitable agriculture by empowering farmers and advisors with the information they need to implement sustainable practices. As adoption of biocontrol solutions grows, so too will agriculture’s ability to safeguard biodiversity, reduce chemical inputs, and support a healthier future for people and the planet.
