SAN is thrilled to announce its recent partnership with the Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) Programme. Launched in October 2015, the SFS Programme is a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns in the food and agriculture sector. Co-led by Costa Rica, Switzerland, and WWF, the programme benefits from the guidance of a Multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC) and collaborates with over 190 partners worldwide.
The Importance of Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration
The SFS Programme exemplifies the power of multi-stakeholder collaboration. With members from government agencies, civil society organizations, research and technical institutions, UN agencies, and the private sector, the programme leverages diverse perspectives and resources to address complex food system challenges. SAN’s involvement in the SFS Programme will enhance its ability to collaborate with a broad array of stakeholders, fostering synergies and innovative solutions to promote sustainable agriculture.
Catalyzing Sustainable Agriculture
One of the primary goals of the SFS Programme is to catalyze urgent transformation towards sustainable food systems. This aligns perfectly with SAN’s mission to promote sustainable agricultural practices that conserve natural resources, protect biodiversity, and improve the livelihoods of farmers. Through this partnership, SAN aims to contribute to and benefit from the SFS Programme’s efforts to implement a systems-based approach, addressing the interconnections between food production, consumption, and environmental sustainability.
Addressing Global Food System Challenges
The global food system faces numerous challenges, including hunger, malnutrition, obesity, food waste, and environmental degradation. The SFS Programme addresses these issues through its focus on promoting sustainable diets, reducing food losses and waste, and ensuring sustainability along all food value chains. By joining the SFS Programme, SAN will be part of a collective effort to tackle these challenges, helping to create food systems that are inclusive, resilient, and sustainable.
Enhancing Awareness and Capacity Building
Raising awareness and building capacity are key objectives of the SFS Programme. These efforts are crucial for driving the adoption of sustainable practices across food systems. SAN’s participation will help amplify these efforts, leveraging its expertise and networks to promote sustainable agriculture practices. Both SAN and the SFS Programme aim to educate stakeholders, from farmers to consumers, about the importance of sustainable food systems and provide the necessary tools and support for implementing sustainable practices.
Developing and Disseminating Tools and Methodologies
To support the transformation towards sustainable food systems, the SFS Programme has developed a range of tools and methodologies. These resources are designed to help governments, the private sector, farmers, and consumers contribute to sustainable food systems. SAN’s collaboration as a global impact network with the SFS Programme will facilitate the development and dissemination of these tools, ensuring they are accessible and effective in promoting sustainable agriculture.
Building Partnerships and Synergies
A core objective of the SFS Programme is to build partnerships and foster cooperation among various initiatives. By joining the SFS Programme, SAN will enhance its capacity to develop and strengthen partnerships with other stakeholders committed to sustainable agriculture. This collaborative approach will enable SAN to leverage additional resources, knowledge, and expertise, ultimately driving greater impact in its efforts to promote sustainable food systems.
Focus Themes of the SFS Programme
The SFS Programme operates through five cross-cutting focus themes, which represent the main entry points for its project portfolio:
Sustainable diets: Promoting diets that are healthy for both people and the planet.
Sustainability along all food value chains: Ensuring that food production, processing, distribution, and consumption are sustainable.
Reduction of food losses and waste: Minimizing food waste to enhance food security and reduce environmental impact.
Local, national, and regional multi-stakeholder platforms: Fostering collaboration at various levels to support sustainable food systems.
Resilient, inclusive, and diverse food production systems: Building agricultural systems that are adaptable, equitable, and capable of withstanding shocks.
The Sustainable Agriculture Network’s partnership with the Sustainable Food Systems Programme marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable agriculture and transforming global food systems. By collaborating with a diverse array of stakeholders, SAN will contribute to and benefit from the SFS Programme’s comprehensive and integrated approach to addressing food system challenges. Together, we can work towards creating food systems that are sustainable, resilient, and equitable for all.
